The versatile Scotland international was signed in September by former boss Garry Monk as a forward.

He started his career with Hearts as a right back but occasionally featured as a striker. And after moving to Cardiff City, he was most often deployed as a midfielder though would push forward into attack.

It had been suggested that Paterson would be the best option within the current Wednesday squad to offer Pulis the physicality in attack he has typically favoured over his managerial career.

But the new Owls boss appeared to pour cold water on that belief when he met with the media this week for the first time since his appointment.

People think Paterson is a forward but I’m not so sure that he is the forward that everyone thought he was going to be,” Pulis said.

“But he’s playing for Scotland and they’ve just qualified so he’s certainly a good player.”

Pulis has however suggested he is open to being proved wrong on his initial thoughts on every player in the Wednesday squad.

“It’s about finding out what he’s about and what his best position is,” he said.

“For a person outside the football club, it’s easy for me to say things but when you get in sometimes, you get a different feel for it.”

Paterson has played as a forward in each of his eight matches for Wednesday so far, scoring once.
