If Sheffield Wednesday are to get out of this one, they need to make it quick.

After a bright start, Julian Borner’s red card and the subsequent penalty just after the half-hour mark killed any real chance of something lovely happening.

Here are the player ratings from yet another fairly miserable outing.

Joe Wildsmith – 5

Not at fault for the goals by any means. Collected what he could tidily enough, but conceded three.

Liam Palmer – 4

Made an excellent, goal-saving block and clearance in the early stages, but looked a little off the pace for much of the game against a fluid Reading attack.

Tom Lees – 6

Genuinely, Wednesday’s biggest goalscoring threat. Hit the bar early doors and stuck to his job at the back. Perhaps a little loose in defending the second.

Julian Borner – 3

Wednesday were looking fairly comfortable until Borner found himself the wrong side of Puscas and pushed him over. Big moments cost games and his red card killed any hopes of an upset.

Osaze Urhoghide – 5

Not one of his finer outings. Started nicely going forward but was sloppy in possession in the most part. Looked like a young lad being shifted about positionally.

Sam Hutchinson – 5

Worked hard and battled on from an early knock that could easily have seen him go off, but he understandably struggled as pass masters Reading made their man advantage count.

Liam Shaw – 5

Pretty tidy in the main, but like Hutchinson was overrun when the home side decided to turn it on.

Josh Windass – 5

Had one or two bright moments but struggled to get into the game. Worked his socks off. Off for Pelupessy, 85.

Barry Bannan – 6

Was the fall guy after Borner’s red on half an hour, off for Penney. Moved the ball around OK up to then when Wednesday were at their best. Could maybe have done better with a chance on 14 minutes.

Kadeem Harris – 4

Barely featured. Will have to do more to become a regular on the flanks of Moore’s three-man attack behind the striker. Looked lost. Off for Marriott, 70.

Callum Paterson – 5

Worked hard but again couldn’t force much in the way of chances. Comedy moment came in the first half when Windass’ free kick crashed into his ribs. If you don’t laugh you’ll cry. Replaced by Rhodes, 70.

Partly at fault for the second and third. Came on into a whirlwind and couldn’t stop it.

Jack Marriott – N/A

On with 20 to go. Had a good run.

Jordan Rhodes – N/A

On with Marriott. Almost got his foot to a chance late on.

Joey Pelupessy -N/A

On for Windass very late
