Wednesday fans are hoping history will repeat itself

Sheffield Wednesday fans on social media are hoping that England's defeat to Croatia in the semi-final of the World Cup will mean they get promoted this season. In the season after England last reached a World Cup semi-final and were knocked out, the Owls bagged promotion to the old First Division.

And while the memories of losing to West Germany on penalties is still a painful one for England fans, Wednesdayites will be hoping Jos Luhukay can guide their team to the Premier League this term.

Wednesday were promoted from the Second Division in third place behind Oldham Athletic and West Ham, and also got their hands on some silverware in the 1990/91 season when they won the League Cup.

Ron Atkinson's side beat Manchester United 1-0 at the old Wembley thanks to a goal from John Sheridan.]

Could the same thing happen in 2018/19?
