Sources have revealed that a handful of Championship clubs are preparing to make the forward central to their transfer plans in the hope they can strike a bargain deal, given the Owls’ cashflow issues.

Fulham, relegated from the Premier League last season, are among the clubs to have reaffirmed their interest but are waiting to confirm the future of manager Scott Parker before launching any firm bids, while The Star can reveal that Birmingham City are the latest second tier side to have enquired about the 27-year-old’s availability.

It is not yet known what sort of figure Wednesday might have put on Windass’ head, or whether they will be willing to sell. Owls boss Darren Moore is known to be a keen admirer of the former Rangers man and has held positive discussions with each of his players during which they discussed his plans for next season.

Windass’ former footballer father Dean, who spent a short amount of time on loan at Wednesday back in 2001, has said that Josh is happy to stay at Hillsborough after those talks. The club are believed to have a year’s option on a contract extension beyond the end of this season.

He has previously been of interest to the likes of QPR and West Brom. And with the transfer window now open it is expected the club’s mettle will be tested with bids from the Championship.

Signed for a fee of around £500k from Wigan Athletic last year, Windass scored 10 times across all competitions in 44 matches last season. He was praised for his contribution particularly towards the end of the campaign, when he offered eight goal contributions in 11 matches.

Moore is understood to be working hard with the club’s recruitment team to build towards next season. While they remain under the terms of a transfer embargo, The Star revealed last month that they are able to sign players in on free transfer or no-fee loan terms.

The club are already working hard to overcome the issue of unpaid wages at S6, with at least partial payments having been paid to staff in recent days.
