The Owls are to undertake a whole scale transformation in the coming weeks having confirmed 10 senior players are to leave the club at the end of their contracts next month.

Wednesday triggered clauses in the contracts of Sam Hutchinson, Liam Waldock and Alex Hunt to stay on another year, but there is still speculation over the future of talented defender Osaze Urhoghide, who has been offered a new deal but has interest from a host of clubs.

One player who may well have been close to a further contract is youngster Matt Penney, an Owls academy graduate who played 32 times for the club over the course of five years.

Bursting onto the scene in 2017, he spent time on loan at Bradford City and Mansfield Town before a season-long stint with former Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay at St Pauli in Germany.

A left-sided defender most comfortable playing as a wing-back, Penney had been at the club since he was eight, but was included in the released long-list and will now be on the hunt for another club.

Posting on Twitter, the Chesterfield-born youngster posted a message to those connected with the Hillsborough club, writing:
