'The days are dark', but former Sheffield Wednesday man backs brighter days ahead

It’s no secret that Sheffield Wednesday have a whole lot of issues to sort out, on and off the field.

Weeks on from relegation to League One as the Championship’s bottom club, the Owls are busy trying to climb out of a financial ruckus that has seen some players go unpaid for three months, a reality that has seen some consider the possibility of walking away from their contracts.

Add to that the rumbling issue of season ticket repayments, the transfer embargo and half a squad to replace, it’s quite a to-do list.

They’re not alone. Plenty of clubs are busy attempting to adapt to the changing face of football and its finances, though few have a list quite as long as Wednesday’s.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Chris Turner believes brighter days are ahead at the club.

And while it may seem like doom and gloom for Owls supporters recently, one notable critic of the club’s dealings in recent months believes there are brighter days ahead.

Lifelong Wednesdayite Chris Turner, who was one of the heroes in the club’s 1991 Rumbelows Cup final win and later became manager of the club, suggested these matters are cylical.

“The days are dark today, but they have been darker in my time,” he told the Wednesday ‘Til I Die podcast. “They were darker in the 70s.

“There have always been disappointing periods, but the wonderful thing about football is that teams and clubs, players and managers can bounce back.

“I’m sure the club will bounce back. When? I don’t know. But they will return. They will return.”
