Sheffield Wednesday fans are unlikely to know the contract length and circumstances of their new manager Tony Pulis until he sees fit, it would seem.

The Owls’ new manager addressed the media for the first time since taking over from Garry Monk last week and refused to budge on questions about the length of his contract at the club.

Monk was understood to be working on a season-to-season rolling deal at Wednesday, along with members of his backroom staff, in what was a similar situation to those of those before him, going back to Carlos Carvalhal, the first managerial appointment of Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Experienced campaigner Pulis expertly dodged the question initially before he was pressed, admitting secrecy over a contract length is nothing new or extraordinary.

“That is between me and the chairman only at this present moment,” he said with a knowing smile.

“Do you want me to tell you how much I’m earning as well?! When I was at Middlesbrough nobody knew that I’d shaken hands on an 18-month contract. At Stoke nobody knew I was on a rolling contract.

“It’s between me, the chairman and the football club.”

Pulis said he was keen to get to know Chansiri, admitting it was difficult while the Owls owner was ‘protecting his family’ in his native Thailand.

The 62-year-old discussed both the short-term goal to ‘steer Wednesday back into the right direction’, but also spoke of a longer-term goal to get the club back into the Premier League.

Pressed on whether he saw it a long-term or short-term job, Pulis said: “I’ve got through my first day and I’m still here!”
