Former Sheffield United man Scott Hogan’s second half strike was enough to condemn Neil Thompson’s men to defeat, a result which leaves them second-from-bottom and three points from safety.

To compound Wednesday’s misery, Celtic-bound youngster Liam Shaw received a second yellow card shortly after the break for fouling Maxime Colin.

Writing on Twitter, our Owls correspondent Joe Crann wrote: “Neil Thompson said that games like these won’t define the season, and that there are games to go.

“He’s right, of course, but that one’s a gut punch. The red card changed the game, and Wednesday remain in the bottom three.”

But what did Wednesdayites make of today’s significant setback?

Let’s take a look at what they’re saying on social media.

@adam7485 We wont go down and things will feel better in the summer. But these players do not deserve a new contract and I can’t wait to see the back of ‘em. We could have a decent budget freed up; Rhodes, Westwood, Harris, Kuchunga, Van Aken, Joey, Odubajo and maybe even Reach.

@Warren1867 Birmingham worst team I've seen this season....We're going exactly where we belong.

@AndyStevenson20 Very tough to take that defeat today. Every time we have a chance to move up the table we lose a must win game. At the end of the day the players we have are inconsistent and not good enough. Every game that goes by staying up is a tougher ask. We need a run of wins.

@george_barber01 That performance from #swfc was gutless. Shaw flying into a challenge was utterly ridiculous that high up the pitch being on a yellow subsequently costing us. It’s depressing watching us at the minute. I desperately don’t want to go down but that’s all I see. Hope I’m wrong.

@JamesMarriott The reality is, even when we do win, it just papers over the cracks. Even if we stay up, we all know #swfc is done. Soulless. Lifeless. Gone. Dead.

@waffs_swfc Biggest game of the season and heads drop because we go down to 10 men. That should GALVANISE a team to go get the points, show some fight! What did we do? Cower. Pathetic.

@emmaswfc_ Anyone at the club aware we are in a relegation battle or?! Where’s the urgency?! I know there are still games to be played points to be earned but I think we may have sealed our fate now it’s a bloody mess.

@relfmj People blaming Shaw or Thompson or Bullen etc need to wake up. We aren't in freefall because of this one game. We are sinking due to the way the club is run and that is the accountability of one person.
