It was the decade of Margaret Thatcher, boom and bust, Stock Aitken and Waterman, the filofax and yuppies, questionable hairstyles and fashion . . . but on the football pitch, Wednesday became a force to be reckoned with again under the management of Howard Wilkinson in the mid-80s.
Now, more than 30 years on, we’ve asked Wednesdayites to take a trip down memory lane to tell us which players from that era they would choose to play in Garry Monk’s present-day squad.
Here’s the men from the 80s Owls fans suggested on Twitter and Facebook.

9. Lawrie Madden
Madden played for Wednesday between 1983 and 1991, scoring two goals in 212 appearances for the club. The Hackney-born defender also starred for eight other clubs, including Mansfield Town, Boston United, Charlton Athletic, Millwall, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Darlington and Chesterfield. After hanging up his boots in 1996, Madden embarked on a career in the media and lecturing in sports journalism and PR. Photo: Steve Ellis
Bannister moved to Hillsborough in a £100,000 deal from Coventry City in the summer of 1981 and soon became a crowd favourite. He was top scorer in each of the three seasons he was at Wednesday. In his first season he was voted Player of the Year and represented England at under-21 level. In 1983/84 he formed a feared partnership with Imre Varadi, with the pair scoring 41 goals between them as Wednesday returned to Division One for the first time in 14 years. However, Bannister never played for the Owls in top flight and left to join Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 1984. Photo: JPI Media
The energetic Shelton formed an impressive partnership with Gary Megson in the Wednesday midfield in the mid-80s. He was brought to the club in 1982 by Jack Charlton, who signed the Nottingham-born Shelton from Aston Villa for £50,000. Shelton spent five years at Hillsborough, helping the club win promotion to the top-flight in 1984 and reach the FA Cup semi-finals two years later. In July 1987 he moved to Oxford United for £150,000. Photo: Steve Ellis
