Stay or go? Should Morgan Fox stay on at Sheffield Wednesday?

It’s been a fascinating story, that of Morgan Fox at Sheffield Wednesday. And it’s one that should continue.

Both player and Garry Monk have confirmed that the left-back is in negotiations with the club over a new deal that would see him stay at Wednesday beyond the end of his current deal, that runs out in the summer.

But unlike those of Cameron Dawson, who signed a four-and-a-half-year deal in January, those negotiations have been ongoing for some weeks, prompting question marks over why and what’s going on.

To be clear, The Star has no reason to believe there are any issues with the negotiations or that Fox has budged on his constant reiteration that he wants to stay at the club long-term.

The question was first asked in the weeks after he was booed by a section of the Wednesday support ahead of the Owls’ midweek clash with Luton in August. Even then Fox maintained he was happy at Hillsborough but that it was in the club’s hands.

The former Wales youth international, whose steep development curve has reportedly been watched closely by senior boss Ryan Giggs in recent months, has been more bullish since making the Owls’ left-back berth his own. He wants to stay at Sheffield Wednesday.

The conversation has been had around where he stands in terms of left-backs within the division. The likes of Joe Bryan, Omar Richards and Yuro Ribeiro are far more attractive prospects going forward, but in terms of consistency and importance to their side, the list stretching ahead of Fox isn’t long.

That importance was outlined when Fox hobbled off injured in the 2-1 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

Reluctantly leaving the field with Wednesday 1-0 up, the 26-year-old left behind a side all out of balance at the back. Only two points were gained in the four-match absence that followed and Monk put his loss up there with that of Steven Fletcher.

The Owls boss has time and again described Fox as a player with the sort of attitude he wants to build his vision for the club around.

Whatever the hold-up with a new deal, Morgan Fox should stay at Sheffield Wednesday next season.
