And time and again this season, Sheffield Wednesday have found themselves on the wrong side of those small, season-defining moments.
After Scott Hogan’s injury-time equaliser for Birmingham on Saturday Wednesday have given up a eye-watering 22 points from winning positions already this season.

Hide AdIt may be cause for surprise that the Owls have actually scored as many goals in the final 15 minutes of matches as they have conceded – 12 apiece – the reason being that the ones in their own net have seemingly been worth so much more.
Their composure in the final 15 minutes appears to be off – they have a lower passing accuracy (65% to 69%) and make fewer ‘smart passes’ than their opponents (0.78 per final 15 minutes to 1.1). And in defence, the Owls make an average of 3.74 fouls in the final moments compared with their opposition’s 2.62.
According to the xG Championship table – taken from the probability of all chances going in across the course of a season – Wednesday should be fourth. No team has a lower goals conversion rate than their 14 per cent.
One such moment arrived yet again on Saturday when Jacob Murphy, clean through on goal with the score at 3-2, fired at Blues keeper Lee Camp.

Hide AdIt was an important chance not lost on Owls star man Barry Bannan, who said: “We could have made it 4-2 when Murph went through and that was a big changing point in the game. I reckon if he scores that then the game is finished.
“He was brilliant, Murph. He was very unlucky. The one he missed was harder than the one he scored because you have so much time to think.
“If he scores that we win the game, but it's a killer blow at the end. It's happened numerous times now and it's getting annoying.
“It's just one of those things, we have to just take it on the chin and bounce back on Wednesday.”
