New Owls signing Lloyd Isgrove has revealed how Matt Young urged him to move to Hillsborough.
The winger, a graduate of Southampton’s highly regarded youth system, knows Young from their days together at St Mary’s Stadium.
Right-back Young, who has yet to make a senior Wednesday appearance, is currently on loan at League Two side Carlisle United along with midfielder Paul Corry.
Isgrove told The Star: “Matt was at Southampton for a couple of years with me. I went on holiday with him last summer so I know him pretty well.
“I spoke to Matt before making my decision, asking him what some of the lads and staff are like and he said they are really good bunch.”
The 22-year-old, who is set to remain with Stuart Gray’s side until the end of the season, is poised to make his Wednesday debut in tomorrow’s South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United.
“I went out on loan to Peterborough last season when they were involved in a play-off push and that was a good experience for me but the Championship is a higher level so I think it will be a lot more physical and be a good test for me,” he said. “I’m expecting it to be a lot different to Under-21s football and quicker than League One.”
While Isgrove is relishing the task of helping Wednesday finish their Championship campaign on a positive note, he still views his long-term future at Southampton. He recently penned a new two-year deal with the Premier League outfit.
“This is really going to help with my development,” he said.
