Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay met the media at the Owls’ Middlewood training complex today. Here’s what cropped up 24 hours before the Championship encounter at Villa Park.

Jordan Thorniley: The centre-half is out of the Aston Villa match with his calf injury, but could be back in training on Monday and available for the Leeds United game next Friday night.

Gary Hooper: The striker, coming back from a long-term hip injury, has picked up a groin problem and won’t feature for the under-23s against Sheffield United tonight. The club are hopeful he can train next week.

Aston Villa: Luhukay says he will pick his strongest side.

Lucas Joao: “Lucas must work on himself to get himself in dangerous areas,” says Luhukay. Says the attacker has no issue about the position in which he is being asked to play.

The Keiren Westwood situation: “We are 100 per cent behind Cammy (No 1 goalkeeper Cameron Dawson). We must not keep speaking about this,” says Luhukay. The boss is pleased with Dawson’s form and says he has helped to keep Wednesday in games, particularly against Stoke City and Nottingham Forest.

Strong Villa/Owls prospects: Villa have great players, says Luhukay, but so do Sheffield Wednesday. The present run of fixtures will show where the Owls are, the boss reckons. He acknowledges previous victories have come against sides who won’t be in play-off contention.

Belief: Luhukay isn’t sure his players believe in themselves enough. He says that at times they look superb in training and need to back themselves to produce the same standards in games.

Adam Reach: “He must make the difference for us with assists and goals. He must work on that.” Accepts the player hasn’t produced his best form since the international break.

Sam Winnall: The centre-forward is several weeks away from team training because of his calf injury. Having treatment and working out individually.
