Ross Wallace says the Owls squad want Wednesdayites on side from day one as they plot a push for the upper reaches of the Championship.

While the winger insists the opening day result will not make or break Sheffield Wednesday’s season, he recognises how valuable for supporter relations beating Bristol City today at Hillsborough would be.

“It’s not the be all and end all but a good start would be nice,” Wallace said.

“To start with a win would get the ball rolling.

“One of the things we’re trying to achieve here is get the fans behind us. That’s vitally important to us.

“The fans have been brilliant since I’ve been here. They’ve travelled in numbers and every time I’ve played against Sheffield Wednesday, the fans have made me think it’s decent here.

“If we can get more of that and really get them going and get them right behind us, it would be brilliant for the players and for the club as well.”

Wallace – who arrived at Hillsborough last month after being released by Burnley at the end of last season – says Carlos Carvalhal’s side are keen to attack the Championship from the off.

But he admits it will be a tough against a newly-promoted Bristol City side whose confidence will be high.

“On paper some people might think they’re favourites because they’ve come up from League One and this could be a harder game than playing against a side that’s been in the Championship for years,” Wallace said.

“But that’s the challenge and we’re looking forward to it.

“We’re in this league, we’re looking to do well and we’ve had a good pre-season.

“So we’re looking forward to attacking this league.

“We’re going in after a comfortable win last weekend which will have given the lads confidence.”

Wednesday will be without injured pair Claude Dielna and Filipe Melo for today’s season opener but Glenn Loovens is fit to play.
