WEDNESDAY captain Anthony Gardner says that the players are right behind manager Dave Jones.

The former England defender also accepts that the team have to take responsibility as they attempt to battle out of the Championship bottom three.

“We’re all behind him,” said the centre-half. “We’re tight-knit. We need to be all together to move forward.

“I think the manager has every confidence in his players; we have every confidence in him.

“We’re all looking in one direction - to move up the league.

“The manager picks the team and sorts us tactically but once we cross that line it’s down to the 11 and the subs who come to affect the game and carry out instructions. We have to take responsibility.”

An assessment today will determine whether Gardner is fit enough to play at Cardiff tomorrow after his hamstring problem.

He said: “It seems to have settled down over the last couple of days. Hopefully I will be okay.”

The verdict on Gardner will determine whether the Owls recall Mark Beevers from his loan at Millwall.

The Owls are also considering an undisclosed offer from the Lions to buy the defender in January when his loan is due to end.

“If they want to buy him then they have to come up with the price that we value him at,” said Jones. Jones, who has other injury doubts, said: “If there’s any doubt whatsoever that these players won’t be back then Beevers will be called back.”

Jones, meanwhile, has revealed that he has a “problem” with Cardiff. He said: “I’ve got a problem with them that will all come to light eventually.“ He refused to elaborate, and added: “It doesn’t need to be in the public domain at this moment. I don’t hold bitterness towards anybody.” The issue is understood to be a financial one relating to his sacking by the Bluebirds.
