Urby Emanuelson is still playing catch up with his fitness following his switch to Hillsborough, according to Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

The former Ajax and AC Milan defender has yet to feature for the Championship club since joining on a free transfer earlier this month.

The 30-year-old, who can play anywhere down the left side, as a full back, wing back or winger, has started two Under-23 matches over the last fortnight as he continues to build up his match sharpness.

Carvalhal said: “Urby has played two games in the Under-23s. He played 90 minutes against Watford on Monday.

“He is still in the process as his last official game was in May. He hasn’t played for a long time and didn’t get a pre-season under his belt.

“Urby needs time and we will decide when he will be ready to help the team.”

Daniel Pudil (thigh) will be checked on today before Carvalhal finalises his plans for tomorrow’s Hillsborough showdown with Nottingham Forest.

Czech Republic international Pudil has been hampered by the injury in recent weeks and was forced to sit out Saturday’s defeat at Birmingham City.

Sam Hutchinson is in line to return, having completed a one-match suspension, but back-up goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after damaging his finger in training last week.
