Sheffield Wednesday: Update on the West Brom fan struck in the face with a ball during Saturday's defeat

Play was stopped for several minutes midway through the second half after a ball struck by Baggies defender Conor Townsend left the man visibly dazed, leaving both Garry Monk and Lee Bullen concerned for his safety.

The man, who was seated just a few rows behind the Wednesday dugout, received medical treatment from both team’s physios and was eventually stretchered out of the Hawthorns to applause from both sets of supporters.

He was discharged at the ground and has suffered no lasting injuries – though he did miss the Baggies’ late winner.

West Brom are in the process of organising the delivery of Townsend’s match shirt to the man by way of compensation.

A spokesman for West Bromwich Albion told BirminghamLive: “He is fine and left the stadium as normal after being attended to. We are organising to get him Conor Townsend’s shirt for his trouble - it was Conor’s clearance that hit him in the face.”

A Spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "During Saturday's game between West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday a member of the crowd was struck in the face the by the ball.

"He was assessed by ambulance staff who were already at the ground and thankfully hadn't suffered any significant injuries and was discharged at the scene."
