Exclusive:Striker back training with Sheffield Wednesday first team ahead of contract end
Sheffield Wednesday are approaching what will need to be a busy summer of transfer activity - and have brought a Birmingham City forward back to train with them.
Young Birmingham City striker Frank Tattum is back training with Sheffield Wednesday, The Star understands, after an initial trial period with the club ended last week.
The 20-year-old forward scored one and was involved in the build-up to another in a seven-day, two-appearance stint with the club’s under-21 side earlier this month. The initial plan was to see him return to his loan stint with Leamington, though the non-league side confirmed on Friday that that arrangement has been cancelled.
The Star can reveal that Tattum has been training back at Wednesday since Monday and has featured in first team sessions. It’s believed that the youngster is approaching an uncertain future, with the Blues having indicated that they will not be taking up the option of a one-year contract extension amid big changes in the St Andrews youth set-up.
The decision is said to have sparked some degree of surprise among some onlookers. Tattum scored 19 goals in the successful Birmingham under-18 side that won the Under-18 PDL North title and National Play-Off Final in the 2023/24 season and spent time training with the Blues’ senior set-up, including involvement in pre-season tours. He has spent time on loan with non-league clubs Alvechurch and Leamington this season.
Though work must continue on the future of Sheffield Wednesday before they are in a position to offer-out any contracts to prospective new players at any level, it is believed that at this stage the club have been impressed by his attitude and are weighing-up an offer to take him on a free agent deal.
Tattum, who has links with the Owls coaching staff through former Birmingham coach and current Wednesday first team assistant Pete Shuttleworth, was spotted watching Wednesday’s under-21 side beat Barnsley 4-0 on Tuesday alongside other figures including Pierce Charles, Ernie Weaver and Nathaniel Chalobah.
