Sheffield Wednesday transfers latest as deadline looms - free agent market, complicated by Wycombe Wanderers

Transfer latest from S6...

Sheffield Wednesday’s search for new additions could go beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline day.

The Owls have made 16 summer signings but are still trying to strengthen their squad ahead of next week’s 11pm deadline. However, clubs can still bring in free agents after that date so that could still be an option for them.

Staff held a transfer meeting on Wednesday to discuss the next steps. The situation could potentially become complicated by the fact they have a match away at Wycombe Wanderers on deadline day.

On this week’s transfer meeting, Henrik Pedersen told The Star: “The outcome is that we are looking at the squad we have now and see how many players who can play one or two positions, and where do we want to upgrade the team. We are working to see what is in the market and to see if we can make our team stronger with some addition.”

Ideally, Wednesday will have all their business done before Tuesday’s deadline but Pedersen is not concerned if it goes beyond that.

“For me I concentrate for the game (against Wycombe), and Simon (Wilson) he will do all the other things with Kevin (Beadell). So we have focus for what we can control, and we can control the game with all the players we are happy for within in our club, and we are using all the energy we have for them.

“What is the ideal world in football? We do the best we can every day. But it's not a problem if something happens afterwards. But of course, number one is to do it before, but it's not a problem.”

In terms of possible outgoings, Pedersen’s message was ‘you never know’ what could happen but that it was ‘quiet’ currently.

One area of the team that Wednesday are looking light in is central midfield, with only Barry Bannan, Billy Mitchell and Jarvis Thornton to choose from, with Tyler Onyango out for the season, and Sean Fusire working his way back to full fitness. With The Owls working under financial restrictions, they might need one or two players to show the versatility

Pedersen said: “We are looking for the whole situation for the whole squad, and of course we're also looking in the central part of the pitch if we need something extra. I think we have seen that (Callum) Slattery can play the eight. We also know that Yan Valery can play the six. So I think we have more players who can play there. So we are looking right now for how can we put the team together in the best way, and so we find this supplement to the squad where we not only increase the quality, but we also increase the number in the right way.”
