Henrik Pedersen issues January transfer window update as Sheffield Wednesday await EFL decision

Sheffield Wednesday are still waiting to receive official confirmation on what they will be allowed to do in the January transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has admitted he is yet to find out what the club will be allowed to do in the upcoming January transfer window.

Following lengthy discussions with the English Football League, Wednesday, last month, were given permission to bring in two free agent signings, swooping for former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper and former Southampton and Burnley winger Nathan Redmond. They marked the club’s first permanent signings since February.

With the January window right around the corner, the Owls will be hoping to get the green light to bring in more additions to their tiny squad for the second half of the season. Currently, Wednesday are operating under a registration embargo that effectively prevents the signing of new players - barring caveats on squad size - and a transfer fee restriction ban that is currently scheduled to last until the end of the 2027 winter transfer window.

Once a takeover is formally completed, all breaches Wednesday currently find themselves under should be lifted. However, there is less clarity on how quickly the fee restriction ban could be lifted, though there is optimism it could be lifted ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window.

It means the most likely scenario Wednesday will find themselves in during the January window will be one that sees them allowed to bring in free agent signings and loan signings without the need for a fee.

Pedersen waiting for confirmation on January window

At this moment in time, though, Pedersen is still waiting to find out exactly what Wednesday will be allowed to do after Christmas.

Pedersen, speaking at Thursday’s pre-match press conference, said: "As of right now, I have no official comments from the EFL on what we are allowed to do for January. I don't know if the takeover will happen before or what they are waiting for.

"Right now, I cannot say it's only loan players, or it's free agents, or we can buy players. At the moment, we can do nothing, and that is why we only have a focus on the players we have."
