Sheffield Wednesday: The man who persuaded Josh Onomah to become an Owl

If Josh Onomah has his way, he intends to be right in the thick of the action for the Owls over the coming weeks and months.

The England Under-21 international made his Wednesday bow in Saturday's pulsating home draw to Stoke City. Onomah came on as a substitute midway through the second half as the Owls fought back from two goals down to earn a point and stretch their unbeaten Championship run to four matches.

"I thought I settled in quite quickly," Onomah told The Star. "I was trying my best to make an impact straight away. 

"Obviously, we scored when I was on so it was good to be part of it."

Onomah replaced Joey Pelupessy in the middle of the park.

He said: "The centre is my preferred position. I have played there since I was young. I like to attack, defend and get on the ball and make things happen."

This is the second year in a row Tottenham, Onomah's parent club, have loaned him out to a Championship team. Onomah spent last season at Aston Villa, hitting four goals in 33 league appearances as Steve Bruce's outfit qualified for the Play-Off Final.

On why he chose to move to Hillsborough as the next part of his footballing odyssey, he said: "I had never been to Sheffield before and for me as a person I like learning. 

"I had other offers to go out on loan but I spoke to the gaffer here and he persuaded me to come. I'm excited to play under him. He seems a trustworthy man and my gut instinct said join Sheffield."

Onomah said he learned of Wednesday's interest in his services a "couple of weeks before deadline day". Both he and Michael Hector joined the Owls on season-long loan deals from Tottenham and Chelsea respectively on August 31.

"It has been great," he said. "The players and staff have welcomed me. 

"Sheffield is different to London but the staff and the players have made me feel very welcome. They have made me feel comfortable and I'm just looking forward to the games and training. I'm happy to be here."

He regards the move to S6 as an important part of his development as a player.

Onomah conceded: "It's a very important year for me. I'm getting older and I still think I can learn a thing or two. 

"I think this is the next step to showcase myself more on and off the pitch. 

"It is to showcase the staff at Tottenham what I'm capable of doing and to get minutes under my belt. I feel I can do that here. I want to express myself and what I'm really about."

He has joined a Wednesday side who are on the up, having taken 10 points from their last four outings.

"I have trained with this team a week now; I believe anything is possible, especially in this league," said Onomah. 

"There is great morale throughout the team and everyone is looking forward to the games. Everyone is excited.

"It is still early days and as a team we take every day as it comes. We are four games unbeaten and hopefully we can continue the run."

The midfielder is itching to make his first Wednesday start as Luhukay's side prepare to take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Describing the Owls' squad as "big" and "great," Onomah said: "Everyone is fighting for a place and that is good because there is healthy competition. 

"There is no bad apple in the team. Everyone is cheering each other on. Hopefully we get the points on Tuesday."
