Sheffield Wednesday make immediate decision on Svante Ingelsson - assessments continue
Sheffield Wednesday battled hard in a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening - and again did so without the influence of star man Svante Ingelsson.
Whether player of the year in-waiting Svante Ingelsson will be seen again in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt this season will come down to how he shapes up next week as considerations continue over the handling of a knee injury. The Swede, who is expected to sweep the awards at the end of what has been a brutally difficult season, has been battling a meniscus issue for some weeks and has missed out on their last two matches as assessments are undertaken.
He was joined on the absent list in their midweek edge-out at Middlesbrough by fellow star man Pierce Charles, who missed out with a knock to his back but is expected to recover his place in the side for the weekend trip to Oxford United.
That trip will come too soon for Ingelsson, with considerations to be had over whether he is to be the subject minor surgery to correct the discomfort in his knee. The 27-year-old has produced a battling effort all season and was regularly seen moving gingerly after matches.
The trip to the Kassam Stadium will come too soon for his return and though an appearance in the final day clash at home to West Brom is not out of the question, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star that a decision will be made in the next couple of days. The problem is not thought to be a major one and Ingelsson is the subject of ongoing medical assessments.
“He will also not play against Oxford and then we will take a final decision on him tomorrow or the day after,” Pedersen said. “We are discussing right now what we have to do and we will come to this tomorrow or the day after.”
