Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher leaves door open for Scotland return

He is the leader of the attack and in the best goalscoring form of his Sheffield Wednesday career.

But Steven Fletcher continues to be overlooked for selection by his country.

The Owls’ eight-goal top-scorer last played for Scotland when the national team secured top place in their Nations League group and a play-off place with wins over Albania and Israel in November 2018.

Despite enjoying a productive calendar year at club level, the experienced centre-forward has not received a single international call--up since Steve Clarke was named Scots boss last May.

Fletcher revealed he was contemplating walking away from his country in August, saying he had a decision to make on whether his body could cope with the rigours of both club and international football.

But he has since spoken to Clarke about the situation and not ruled out playing for the national team again.

Fletcher, who has notched 10 goals in 33 Scotland appearances, told The Star: "He [Clarke] has just said, 'keep your phone on'.

“He didn't want me to close the door completely and I agreed not to close the door completely and officially but he's obviously having a look at other players.

"I don't know; I'm not 100 percent sure on what's going on.

“Especially the way we're going, I want to stay as fit as I can for the club. We have got a good thing going here."

Despite a poor European Championship qualifying campaign, the Scots are two play-off matches away from playing in a major tournament for the first time since 1998.

They topped their Nations League section, guaranteeing home advantage for their one-off semi-final with Israel on March 26. Should Clarke's side defeat Israel at Hampden Park, they will face either Norway, who have not suffered a home defeat in more than three years, or Serbia in the final.

On the possibility of a Scotland recall, Fletcher added: "I will take every week as it comes; I would rather concentrate on Sheffield Wednesday for now."

Fletcher, whose present Owls contract runs out next summer, is expected to spearhead their forward line when they welcome in-form Brentford to Hillsborough on Saturday.
