SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Sodje set for charlton loan

CHARLTON Athletic are the club who look set to borrow Akpo Sodje - and it could open the way for the Owls to bring in a loan signing of their own.

The Sodje loan deal is likely to be completed either this morning - making him eligible for Charlton's home League One game against MK Dons this afternoon - or next week.

Owls manager Brian Laws said: "If Akpo goes out for 28 days he will get in four or five games, which we can't give him at the moment, and it can only be a win-win situation for us before he rejoins us with his match fitness improved.

"We'll have to subsidise the wages; it doesn't give me a great deal of scope to bring anybody in, with the wage budget I have left, but we are looking do something before we play Ipswich next Saturday."

Laws is keeping potential targets under wraps and will not say which position he wants to strenghen. At Charlton, Sodje would be teaming up with his brother, Sam, a former centre-half target of Laws, and ex-Wednesday striker Deon Burton.

Former Owls left back Peter Gilbert has signed for League Two outfit Northampton on a contract lasting for the rest of the season.

He was a free agent after leaving Oldham in August. He was released by Wednesday in April and had trials with Huddersfield, Southend and Coventry. The defender also had a trial with Mansfield before joining Oldham.

A visit to Hillsborough last Saturday for the QPR game by two groups of possible investors, believed to be from America and Italy, has continued a long-established trend of potential backers being invited to take a close-hand look at the club.

Wednesday's advisers, the American bank Inner Circle Sports, have a global network and are coordinating the Owls' search for new money.

Wednesday remain confident it will end successfully; they hoped earlier this year that a deal could be done by Christmas but will not be concerned if the right transaction takes a little longer.
