SHEFFIELD Wednesday today sprang a surprise by announcing their latest striker signing only a few hours before their Carling Cup tie against Blackpool.

Manager Gary Megson, though in the market for another forward, had been unsure whether another deal would be completed before the weekend, after the arrival of Chris O’Grady.

But today the club were able to announce the signing on loan of Daniel Uchechi on loan from Nigerian club Dender.

Aged 21, he will be with the Owls until January and he is eligible for tonight’s Hillsborough match.

His signing - Gary Megson’s seventh of the summer - follows the £350,000 deal with Rochdale for O’Grady, who misses the Cup-tie because of a heel injury.

Uchechi, a Nigeria Under-20 and Under-23 international, moved to England in 2002 and was on the books of Charlton, West Ham and Leicester where Sven Goran Eriksson took him on loan from Dender in February but the striker has not played a senior game in England.

He becomes Gary Megson’s seventh summer recruit and will wear the number 27 shirt.

The manager said: “There were one or two other clubs interested in Danny from a higher level so I am pleased to bring him to Wednesday.

“He has good feet, good pace and can get a goal.

“He did well with us while he was on trial for a week, so while I cannot commit to a permanent contract on that basis, he has a chance on loan and we can take it from there.”
