SHEFFIELD Wednesday this afternoon confirmed the deadline-day loan signings of Bolton midfield player Joey O’Brien and Wigan goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

Both have joined the Owls for the rest of the season.

O’Brien, aged 25, who can also play at right back, begins a second loan spell at Hillsborough having spent three months there in the 2004-05 season.

Nicholls, aged 18, has been signed as cover for Richard O’Donnell, who made a sound debut last Saturday and is the club’s only fit senior keeper because of injuries to Nicky Weaver and Arron Jameson.

O’Brien has made 70 appearances for Bolton and has three Republic of Ireland caps.

Nicholls is an England Under 19 keeper who was given a contract at Wigan when he was only 17.

He has twice gone out on loan as a cover keeper, to Hartlepool and Shrewsbury.
