Sheffield Wednesday should benefit after pair get more international experience

The Owls are set to resume their league campaign this weekend...

Two Sheffield Wednesday players have got more international experience under their belts.

Owls duo Harry Gray and Will Grainger have both had regular game-time for their countries during this extended break from club football. Gray has played plenty of minutes for England under-19s and Grainger has featured heavily for Wales’ under-19s.

The action will be valuable to the pair ahead of returning back to The Owls. Gray had been unavailable due to concussion - missing three games - before coming off the bench against Stockport County just before the international break. The on-loan Leeds United attacker played 70 minutes on Monday in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Belgium in Marbella. Gray could be the solution to Wednesday’s left wing problems while Louie Barry recovers from an ankle injury. Gray has started in a wide left role earlier this season and he has been used there by England, providing an assist against Norway last week. Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe have been deployed on the left flank in Barry’s absence but neither excelled.

Grainger started in Wales’ 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland, which also took place in Marbella. The teenager has not played in the league yet this season but has made starts in the Carabao Cup against Wolves and in the EFL Trophy at Salford City. More minutes for him will keep sharp while he awaits his next opportunity.

The pair will now head back to The Owls, who host Sunderland under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night before travelling to Huddersfield Town on Saturday which will be their first league game in three weeks.

Results at the weekend meant Wednesday dropped to fourth in the League One table. They are two points behind leaders Plymouth Argyle but have two games in hand. Huddersfield climbed above The Owls into third on Saturday with a 3-1 win at Burton Albion.
