Sheffield Wednesday set to re-sign Manchester City midfielder on loan
Latest transfer news from S6...
Manchester City midfielder Jaden Heskey is set to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan, The Star understands.
The 20-year-old was on loan at The Owls in the second-half of last season, making 20 appearances, including 19 starts. The central midfielder is set to complete the move ahead of Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline. Clubs can still sign free agents after the window closes.
Wednesday have held an interest in bringing Heskey back to Hillsborough all summer and now it looks like they have got their man. His arrival will boost their options in the middle of the park following a likely season-ending injury to Tyler Onyango. With only Barry Bannan, Billy Mitchell and Jarvis Thornton to choose from, central midfield was identified as an area they needed to add to. Henrik Pedersen had previously spoke about how they were looking at which of their other players could play that position, with the likes of Yan Valery, Liam Palmer and Sean Fusire having featured their before, while Callum Slattery can fill that role too.
A recruitment meeting was held last week after the defeat to Wolves in the Carabao Cup and it is understood it was concluded that they needed a ball-carrying midfielder and Heskey fits that profile.
EFL clubs are permitted to sign as many loanees as they like but can name only five in a matchday squad. Heskey’s arrival would mean Wednesday have five with Mason Burstow, Harry Gray, Kieran Morrison and Ali Al-Hamadi already in the building.
Speaking about Heskey in January, Pedersen said he was a ‘very interesting player’ with ‘big potential.’ He told The Star. “I think defensively he's a running player, he's tactically strong, and he's strong in his duels, he's good for the second ball in Championship football. On the ball, he's generally very, very strong. I think he's a very interesting profile for a club like us.”
Jaden’s dad Emile, who played for England and Liverpool among others, spoke highly about his son’s time at S6 despite the difficult circumstances last season.
“Jaden really enjoyed his time at Sheffield Wednesday,” Emile said earlier this year. “Naturally, it’s difficult as a young player when the club are having to move on a lot of experienced professionals because it does leave a void and can certainly impact the squad. Jaden left home for the first time in order to go and play for Wednesday, so that was a unique experience for him which he learned a lot from.
“Training in a men’s first team is also an entirely new experience. With no disrespect intended to under-18s or under-21s teams, men’s first team training has a lot more purpose and is results-driven, rather than development. He learned what it’s like to be leading in a game and having to defend that lead, and ending up on either side of a result - but having to bounce back immediately for the next match in a few days’ time.”
