Sheffield Wednesday defender, Akin Famewo, will see his current deal with the Owls expire at the end of this season.

The 25-year-old joined Wednesday under Darren Moore in 2022, signing a three-year deal at Hillsborough following his exit from Norwich City, and has since gone on to make 65 appearances for the club under various different managers.

Famewo has showcased his versatility on a number of occasions over the past few seasons, playing in different positions when required, but he has come in for particular praise in recent weeks as he shines on the left side of a central three in Danny Röhl’s current Owls setup.

It’s understood that even prior to his recent form there was a desire to extend his time at S6, and The Star is led to believe that the hope is to tie him down on a new deal before the year is out so that he doesn’t land up in the final six months of his contract - where the risk of losing him as a free agent becomes possible.

The former Charlton Athletic defender has been practically ever-present for the club since the end of the last international break, starting the last five Championship fixtures, and his performances have drawn plenty of superlatives as he helped the club to vital victories over West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City.

Wednesday have a number of other players out of contract at the end of this season, and Röhl has spoken previously about his desire to make sure that those who he wants to stay at the club don’t end up leaving due to a lack of proactiveness from their side.
