Sheffield Wednesday seek 'solution' to positional dilemma - one player described as 'option soon'

Your latest Wednesday news...

Owls boss Henrik Pedersen says they are trying to find a ‘solution’ for one of their attacking positions.

League leaders Sheffield Wednesday host last season’s play-off final losers Stockport County at Hillsborough on Saturday in front of an expected crowd of more than 30,000. The eighth-placed Hatters, who are the top scorers in League One, are likely to be a dangerous opponent.

In the goalless draw against Wigan Athletic last weekend - a team Stockport hammered 4-0 away - Pedersen selected Callum Slattery, who has impressed in the number 10 position so far this season, on the left wing, particularly when out of possession, although he explained he was encouraged to roam centrally when Wednesday had the ball.

The selection choice did not work on this occasion and Slattery was taken off after an hour. With Louie Barry out injured, The Owls don’t have a natural standout replacement, although they have a number of players who can feature there like Jamal Lowe, Mason Burstow, Davis Keillor-Dunn, and Harry Gray, whom Pedersen name-checked in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Pedersen appeared to hint that Gray is a strong contender to start there and that Slattery will be used back in his favoured number 10 position more often than not.

He told The Star: “We have more players who can play there, and Harry is also starting to come back now. So he will also be an option soon, and we can see with Slattery that when he plays defensively in the side, he can do it. But we also see a Slattery that is not so empowered as when he is in the central part of the pitch. And here we try to find a solution for this left side, and also try to find a solution for Slattery to bring him in his best position.”

After the visit of Stockport, Wednesday do not have another league game for three weeks until October 10, although they do have two EFL Trophy matches.
