The FA says it has launched an inquiry into Gary Madine’s conduct after Sheffield Wednesday’s midweek defeat at Carlisle United.
The 21-year-old forward was red-carded in the game and is due to received a one-match ban.
But an FA inquiry could see that punishment extended.
An FA spokeswoman said: “Our current position is that we are investigating the matter.”
Madine seemed to speak to some hostile members of the Cumbrian crowd on his way off the pitch and later had a public fall out with a fan on Twitter, writing: “useless fans! Needed the man in black 2 get u the win. Enjoy mid table peace out.”
The remarks were later deleted.
The striker says he is generally ‘very happy’ at Wednesday, where he has scored 11 goals in League One this season - but he may be in hot water if his suspension is increased.
