Among the players to leave the Owls was defender Tom Lees who ended a seven-season spell at Hillsborough upon the expiry of his contract.

In a farewell message to Wednesday fans, the 30-year-old said: “I could not leave the club without taking the time to thank you all for everything you have done for me over the last seven plus years.

“The welcome I received immediately and the support over the years really means so much to me and I won’t forget it. The pre kick-off part of ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ when the music cuts out and the fans take over will never leave me.
