EVERTON have agreed to extend the Hillsborough loan stay of midfield starlet Ross Barkley, Dave Jones has confirmed.

Manager David Moyes was at the Leeds game and saw the 18-year-old produce perhaps his best performance of his first month with the Owls.

He is staying on a week-to-week arrangement, which is permissible because it is classed as a youth loan rather than an ordinary loan, where a maximum length of stay has to be stipulated.

Everton can recall him at short notice if necessary and will continue to review his situation.

But Barkley is set to stay in the team for this Wednesday’s match at Blackburn as the Owls bid to build on the form they showed against Leeds and notch their first win in 10 games.

Chris Kirkland is fit and ready to play despite the assault on him by a fan last Friday.

Kirkland, though shocked and sore after the attack, did not suffer a serious injury and completed the game.

He has said: “I would like to thank everyone from the football world for their messages of support, particularly from Sheffield Wednesday, and now I am looking forward to our game against Blackburn.

“The sad thing is that what happened overshadowed an outstanding display and we want to build on that on Wednesday.”

The Owls gave arguably their best performance of the season against Leeds though they were denied a victory by an outstanding late goal by Michael Tonge.

Dave Jones is awaiting the outcome of a scan on Rhys McCabe, who was ruled out by a thigh problem and was replaced by Paul Corry. The Irishman could get his second Championship start at Blackburn.

Corry and Barkley were described by Jones as outstanding against Leeds.

Jones was relieved that Kirkland suffered no lasting harm, for No 2 keeper Stephen Bywater was barely fit enough to be on the bench last Friday after being ill.

Bywater got up from his sick bed on the morning of the match, and changed in a dressing room away from the others players so they would not catch the bug. .
