Third-from-bottom Sheffield Wednesday have allayed fears over the fitness of Stephen McPhail, who sustained a thigh injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

Owls boss Dave Jones has allowed the influential midfielder to go back to Ireland this week to rest and recuperate ahead of their away double-header at Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley after the two-week international break.

“Stephen is okay,” Jones told The Star. “We have given him a few days off which he needed.”

McPhail, capped 10 times by the Republic of Ireland, has started the Owls last four Championship matches, having not played in a competitive game since January.

Jones added: “I have been very pleased with Stephen. He needed game time as he has not played a lot of matches recently.”

Wednesday are waiting on the outcome of a scan to determine how long skipper Reda Johnson will be out of action. The left-back hurt his groin against Ipswich and underwent a scan yesterday.

Illness kept Joe Mattock out of the Owls Development League encounter with Barnsley at Hillsborough last night.
