Why Bannan is still the main man in Wednesday's midfield

Sheffield Wednesday's Barry Bannan is expected to return to Garry Monk's starting XI at Birmingham City on Saturday.

Eyebrows were raised at the decision to leave Barry Bannan out of Wednesday’s starting line-up for Saturday’s clash with fellow strugglers Reading.

Bannan’s initial exclusion raised questions over his importance to the team – unfathomable even a few weeks ago – with question marks raised over his influence on recent matches.

But as our Wednesday reporter Alex Miller found, the stats reveal that the Scot is still the Owls' key man in the middle of the park.

Another sell-out on the road

Out-of-form Wednesday will be looking to halt a shocking sequence of results when they head to St Andrew's on Saturday to take on Birmingham City.

Garry Monk's side have slipped to 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship, nine points outside of the play-off places, having won just once in 10 outings since Christmas.

And having slumped to a dismal 3-0 defeat against Reading at Hillsborough on Saturday, the Owls will face a difficult task to arrest their poor form against an in-form Blues side - managed by Pep Clotet -  which hasn't lost in all competitions since New Year's Day.

However, to do so they will have to buck a recent trend which hasn't seen Wednesday win against Birmingham in five games - while they haven't returned from a road trip to St Andrew's with three points since Gary Hooper's brace secured a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in February 2016.

So, we've decided to take a trip down memory lane to the winter of 2016 when Hooper stunned the St Andrew's faithful to send the travelling Wednesdayites into delirium.

Birmingham City teenager Jude Bellingham has caught the eye of Premier League clubs and German giants Bayern Munich.

With Wednesday looking to end their poor run when they travel to Pop Clotet's Birmingham City on Saturday, our reporter Richie Boon takes a closer look at the £50m Blues starlet Garry Monk's side will come up against at St Andrew's.
