Sergio Aguero’s early second half goal settled the fifth round tie and although there was something of a late rally, the Owls never really looked like clawing their way back into the match.

There were positives to take from the performance though, which Garry Monk will look to take into Saturday’s Championship trip to Brentford.

Here’s how we rated the Wednesday players…

First start since August 2018. Made a smart save down to his left from Bernardo Silva early after the break. Got a hand to Aguero's opener but could not keep it out. Made a great save to deny John Stones from close-range with 20 minutes to go and another two stops from Mahrez soon after. Denied Sterling with his legs in stoppage time.

Liam Palmer 7

Had his hands full trying to mark Mahrez, Jesus and Aguero who all kept drifting out wide, as well as bursts forward from Mendy. Stuck to his task well. Won the ball back on the edge of City's area which led to Fletcher's chance. Cut out a pass to Mahrez who was in on goal as the clock ticked down.

Dominic Iorfa 9

Outstanding. Was always in the right position, making a number of key interceptions. Much more like it from the centre-back after a shaky few performances.

Julian Borner 6

Gave the home fans a few nervy moments as he tried dribbling the ball on the edge of his own box. Subbed at half-time for Lees. Not known whether that was tactical or due to an injury.

Morgan Fox 7

Was not as busy as Palmer as City's attacks mostly came down their left. Did what he had to well enough.

Barry Bannan 8

Superb. More than held his own against City's superstars. Played some lovely passes. Nutmegged David Sila with an outrageous piece of skill.

Kieran Lee 6

Worked hard for the team and kept his discipline in midfield. Hobbled off on the hour-mark, replaced by Alex Hunt.

Joey Pelupessy 5

Covered a lot of ground but hardly touched the ball.

Jacob Murphy 7

Starting show some good consistency. Tracked Mahrez well and gave Palmer good protection.

Fernando Forestieri 7

Hassled and hurried the City defence and won a couple of free-kicks. A little surprising he was replaced by Fletcher 10 minutes into second-half.

Alessio Da Cruz 7

Surprise package. His best performance in a Wednesday shirt. Had lots of energy and chased down everything.

Subsititutes

Replaced Borner at half-time. Was solid enough and had a chance from a set-piece late on but did not connect with the ball. Made a couple of key defensive headers from crosses late on.

Steven Fletcher 6

Came on for Forestieri after the break. Almost turned home Hunt's fizzed cross on 80 mins which was Wednesday's best chance of the game.

Alex Hunt 6

Replaced Kieran Lee who hobbled off. Delivered a teasing cross which Fletcher almost slid in.
