Both teams were in a good run of form as they headed into the game, but with their expensively pieced together side and long unbeaten run there was never any doubt who the heavy favourites were.
The Saints have been bossing possession stats all season, but for a few months now they've been winning games as well - making it very difficult for teams to get at them. For Wednesday it was no different.
Wednesday held their own for the most part, even if they didn't create much, but errors led to the first two goals and after that there was no coming back for Danny Röhl's outfit. Here's how we rated the players on the day:
1. Cameron Dawson - 5
Kept his place, deservedly, after the arrival of Beadle, and did well. Could do nothing about goals, and made one really good stop down to his right in the first half and dealt with everything else pretty strongly.
2. Liam Palmer - 4
Back at full back on his 417th appearance for the Owls, and had a tough time of it as Southampton bombarded the wings. Stood up to the challenge well for the most part.
3. Bambo Diaby - 3
Straight back into the side following the end of his suspension, and it was always going to be a tough afternoon. Misjudged the ball for Adams' opener, and it was also an error from him that set them free for Armstrong and their second. One to forget for the defender.
4. Michael Ihiekwe - 6
Deservedly kept his place after a couple of excellent performances, and made an important clearance off the line early doors. Won loads in the air and was probably the Owls' best performer on the day.
