Sheffield Wednesday play waiting game on key player Callum Paterson after injury ahead of Millwall clash

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed plenty of boosts in recent weeks on the injury front, with the likes of Massimo Luongo and Chey Dunkley now back amongst things – but now they’ll be worried about another.

Callum Paterson is in a rich vein of form in front of goal, with his opener against Bournemouth being his sixth of the season in all competitions and his fourth in the last seven matches.

The Scotsman could well be on track for his top-scoring season since leaving Scotland (he scored 10 for Cardiff in 2017/18), but there are doubts about his availability going into this weekend’s clash against Millwall.

Paterson, who was voted as SWFC’s Player of the Month for January, had to come off after 55 minutes after picking up a knock in the Bournemouth win, and Neil Thompson admitted that they’re not yet sure of the extent of his problem.

By the end of today they may have a better idea of where the 26-year-old is at from a fitness perspective, but with the quick turnaround and sheer amount of games at present, ‘Thommo’ may look to give him a rest when they make the trip to London.

Speaking after the victory over the Cherries, the Owls boss said, "I think he got his studs caught in the turf and he either turned his knee or ankle… It’s too early (how long he’ll be out). We will assess him. The lads will have a rest tomorrow and we will then come in on Thursday bright, breezy and ready to go for the trip to Millwall."

Meanwhile, the club are also waiting on the likes of Moses Odubajo, Liam Shaw, Joost van Aken and Cameron Dawson as they continue to recover from their respective injuries, while Dominic Iorfa is still going through his rehabilitation after a serious Achilles injury towards the end of last year.

Odubajo has a hamstring problem, Shaw injured his shoulder, Van Aken is dealing with an ankle knock and Dawson hurt his knee last year, and there is a chance that all four could potentially be back in action again before the month is out.

Wednesday face the Lions at The Den at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
