Carlos Carvalhal, the Sheffield Wednesday boss, is demanding his players tighten up defensively after their pre-season friendly loss to Braga.

The Portuguese head coach said he was pleased with many aspects of his team’s display against one of his hometown club.

But goals either of side of half-time from Rodrigo Pinho and Alan condemned the Owls to a 2-1 loss. Caolan Lavery registered mid-way through the second half before Wednesday switched off from a corner in the 77th minute to let Alan volley home and sentence them to defeat.

He said: “It felt like an official game because Braga took it very seriously. They played their first-team and showed good quality. It was very competitive. We played a good team and gave a good account of ourselves.

“It is not the score that is important. It is important we learn from the mistakes we made.

“We did some good things. I’m very happy because a lot of things we are working in training are coming but there are some mistakes we must correct. We can’t give a goal away like that from a set piece away.”

Carvalhal felt Wednesday were the better team after the re-start.

He said: “We were very good in the second half. We caused Braga some big problems. They only had one chance in the second half when we gave away the corner.”

Keiren Westwood lasted just 13 minutes of his first warm-up match after picking up a knock.

“I hope it is not important,” said Carvalhal, whose team play Farense in a training ground match tonight. “We took him off as a precaution.”
