Sheffield Wednesday have received messages of praise from Merseyside, including a former player, for the way they commemorated the 25th anniversary of the disaster at the weekend.
The club put personalised red roses, naming the victims, on 96 white seats which had been specially installed on the front two rows at the Leppings Lane end for Saturday’s game with Blackburn Rovers.
Wreaths were laid at that end before kick off whilst the club dedicated the front cover of their match programme to a picture of the Anfield Memorial to the 96.
Among the grateful messages from Merseyside was one from former Owls striker Ryan Lowe who comes from Liverpool and currently plays for Tranmere Rovers.
“It was a great touch from Sheffield Wednesday football club to see what they did,” said Lowe who had a successful spell with the Owls in season 2011/12.
The annual service at the Hillsborough Memorial at Wednesday’s ground will be at 3pm today until 3.06pm. The ground itself will be open until 6pm for anyone who wishes to pay respects inside as well as at the memorial.
