Sheffield Wednesday have lost their appeal over the red card picked up by Keiren Westwood against Derby County on Saturday.

The goalkeeper, one of the Owls most consistent performers this season, will now miss tonight’s Championship clash with Millwall at the New Den.

Westwood rushed out and brought down Tom Ince in the box and although there was no disputing it was a clear penalty, Wednesday had argued that the fact that Darren Bent had put the ball in the net afterwards indicated that a clear goalscoring opportunity hadn’t been denied and that in any case, Kamil Zayatte was back as a covering defender.

Stuart Gray said immediately after the 3-2 defeat: “I thought it was similar to the Wayne Rooney one the other night at Preston.

“The referee has a decision to make and I think we’ve been punished twice.

“Whether it’s a penalty or not, Kamil Zayatte was back to cover so I thought it was a yellow card if he was going to be punished.

“The red card was a bit harsh.”

Westwood is unavailable for just one game and will be up for selection again for Saturday’s match against Middlebrough at Hillsborough.
