Sheffield Wednesday: Owls linked with swoop for former Forest loanee

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in offering Benfica forward Nelson Oliveira another return to England, according to reports in Portugal.

The forward spent much of last season on loan with Nottingham Forest, scoring nine goals in 29 appearances before a groin injury in March ended his season early in and dashed his hopes of making it into the Portugal squad for Euro 2016.

The 24-year-old has had loan spells with six clubs – including time with Swansea City – since graduating from the Benfica youth set up and has reportedly been told he is free to find a new employer this summer.

Oliveira is the latest Portuguese or Portugal-based player to be linked with Wednesday, with head coach Carlos Carvalhal understood to be a major factor.

Sporting’s Scottish midfielder Ryan Gauld and Monaco forward Ivan Cavaleiro have also been linked with moves to Hillsborough so far this summer.

Wednesday have already added a forward to their ranks with the signing of Steven Fletcher, who joined on a four year deal on Friday.

And they have reportedly seen an £11.5m bid for Fulham striker Ross McCormack rejected.

Former Owls loanee Michael Turner has been targeted by League One side Charlton Athletic.

Turner spent most of last season on loan at Hillsborough but made just 12 appearances.

Injury issues blighted his early months with Wednesday and he struggled to break up the Tom Lees-Glenn Loovens partnership late in the season.

His current club Norwich City took up the option of another year on his contract earlier this summer but Turner’s game time is expected to be limited at Carrow Road.

Wednesday have added another young player to their development squad with the signing of Everton defender Jordan Thorniley.

The 19-year-old centre half follows Elliot Percival in signing a one-year deal.
