Sheffield Wednesday could be set to offer a lifeline to £3m Scottish midfielder Ryan Gauld according to reports north of the border.

Carlos Carvalhal is being linked with a deal with his former club Sporting to sign 20-year-old Gauld on a season-long loan.

Gauld was snapped up for £3m as an 18-year-old by Sporting from Dundee United and handed a six-year deal, such was the promise he showed with remarkable technique on the ball from a young age.

But the Scotland U21 international’s spell in Portugal has been one of struggle, having made just five appearances for the Sporting first team.

Huddersfield Town made a move for Gauld earlier in the season only for Sporting to pull the plug on the deal.

It has been suggested Sporting could be looking for a permanent departure for the midfielder.

The Owls’ first away game of the season has been switched to a later kick off time for Sky TV coverage.

The trip to Norwich City will now kick of at 5.30pm.

Wednesday yesterday made their first signing of the summer in former Leicester City defender Elliot Percival.

The 18-year-old will join the Owls’ development squad which saw a number of departures at the end of last season.

Percival spent almost ten years with Leicester and has signed a one-year deal with Wednesday.

n Former Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland yesterday joined League One side Bury on a one-year deal.

Kirkland left Preston North End – whom he joined after rejecting the offer of a new contract with Wednesday – at the end of last season having made five appearances.
