Trialist Dejan Kelhar will get another chance to earn a permanent Owls contract after impressing in their pre-season friendly against FC Arsenal Tula.

Kelhar, previously of Red Star Belgrade, played the entire match as Sheffield Wednesday slipped to a 2-1 defeat last night despite taking an early lead through Michail Antonio.

The Slovenian international partnered skipper Glenn Loovens and then Kamil Zayatte at the heart of their rearguard. Now the 30-year-old is set to fly back to the UK with the rest of the Wednesday squad today, having caught the eye during their five-day pre-season training camp in Slovenia.

Owls head coach Stuart Gray told The Star: “He played very well so we have invited him to come back with us.

“He and Glenn Loovens looked like they had played 25 games together.

“Dejan will feature in Sunday’s game versus Doncaster Rovers. I need to see him against British opposition.

“Dejan is an experienced player. His reading of the game is good and he has conducted himself well in training and slotted in very well with the other lads.”

Sam Hutchinson was forced off at half-time with a knee injury.

Gray added: “Overall, it was a good, physical workout for us and a very rewarding training camp.”

The Wednesday chief resisted the temptation to give run-outs to Jose Semedo and Kieran Lee, with the midfield duo carrying minor groin problems. He expects the duo to be available for selection against Rovers.
