Oguchi Onyewu wants to hold off any contract talks with Wednesday until the season has ended.

But he may decide on his future before the World Cup starts rather than see if the tournament widens his options, if he makes the USA’s squad.

He said it is “impossible” for him to know yet what the future holds:

“My focus was coming here, performing until the end of the season, then afterwards if contract talks come up I can focus on that, but I don’t want to do so beforehand and get ahead of myself.

“I’m one of those players who wants to concentrate on one goal at a time. If you have too many things on your plate, you can’t give 100 per cent to all of them; you’re kind of split.

“After the next two games, if they want to have talks, I’m definitely open to do that. I’ve no agenda to say no or yes but I wanted to focus on this season and once the season finished then see what cards I have and see what the right direction is.

“If I go the Brazil, it will be my third World Cup; as a veteran you realise the structure and how it works. A lot of younger players like to use the World Cup as a platform and springboard and say ‘if I play well in the World Cup the whole world is open to me.’

“The reality is that it is not as easy as that. It’s a collective effort in a tournament format; you might play well but be overshadowed by your team’s poor performance.

“You can’t put all your eggs in a basket of a tournament; it has to be your form beforehand and after. The World Cup may help you, but I’m not against solidifying my future before the World Cup.”
