Sheffield Wednesday old boy 'can't wait' to make Hillsborough return ahead of Wigan clash

A familiar face will return to Hillsborough this weekend when Sheffield Wednesday take on Wigan Athletic.

Former Sheffield Wednesday left-back Morgan Fox is relishing his return to Hillsborough with Wigan Athletic ahead of Saturday’s League One clash between the two sides.

Fox, 32, spent three-and-a-half years at Hillsborough, making 103 appearances and scoring four goals. He joined the Owls from Charlton Athletic in January 2017 before leaving on a free transfer at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The defender, who joined Stoke City after leaving Hillsborough, is expected to start for Wigan this weekend after being named in manager Gary Caldwell’s starting line-up for each of the Latics’ last two matches. Fox joined Wigan in August last year, signing a two-year deal after leaving QPR.

The former Charlton defender, who improved throughout his time at Wednesday, has only played at Hillsborough once since leaving the club just over six years ago, featuring in a goalless draw between the Owls and Stoke in November 2020. The UK was under COVID-19 restrictions at the time, meaning the contest was played behind closed doors.

Having not played in front of supporters in S6 since the Owls’ 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup in March 2020, Fox is looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Hillsborough once again.

"It's a place I'm really looking forward to going back to," said Fox, as quoted by Wigan Today. "I know it's going to be full, it's going to be bouncing, and I can't wait to get there.

"Playing at places like that are why you want to be a footballer, and I'll be relaying that message that to the lads in the dressing room.”

Wigan will make the trip to Hillsborough looking to get back to winning ways after being beaten 4-0 by Stockport County at the Brick Community Stadium last weekend. That marked their fourth defeat in their opening five matches, meaning they will arrive in S6 propping up the League One table.

Fox added: “The Stockport game is done, let's all move on. We know there’ll be pressure on us, but I've always said that pressure is a privilege, because it means you're doing something right.

"The rewards are the same, if you come out on top, and we need to be at it for what will be another big game."
