'Certainly' - ex-Premier League manager shares Sheffield Wednesday wish as rebuild continues
Sheffield Wednesday have not returned to the Premier League since being relegated 26 years ago.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has revealed just how hungry he is to see Sheffield Wednesday return to the Premier League in the future, describing them as “a huge football club”.
The Owls have not returned to the top flight since being relegated in 2000, meaning they have not rubbed shoulders with England’s elite for more than a quarter of a century.
The closest the Owls came to returning to the Premier League was when they achieved back-to-back play-off finishes under former boss Carlos Carvalhal during the 2015/16 and 2016/17 Championship campaigns.
Those back-to-back top-six finishes, however, now feel like a lifetime ago, with Wednesday once again competing in League One after being plunged into administration by former owner Dejphon Chansiri last October. This is Wednesday’s seventh season in the third tier since dropping out of the Premier League 26 years ago.
However, following Arise Capital Partners’ takeover of the club in May, there is confidence that Wednesday will eventually find a route back to English football’s top table, although there is no doubt they have a very, very long road ahead of them amid the amount of work still required.
Nevertheless, Sherwood, who made his senior debut at Hillsborough for Watford in September 1987, is hoping to see them return to the top flight eventually, insisting that the Owls are the ideal club to invest in.
Speaking to The72 via MaxFreeBets, Sherwood said: “I certainly want to see Sheffield Wednesday higher up and back in the top flight eventually. I made my debut there.
“I remember going there and that crowd and that team you had to play against – incredible players there. If you had the opportunity to spend the money, if you had it, to pile it into that club, that is a huge football club and should be a Premier League club.”
