'Deserved to win' - Salford boss reflects on Sheffield Wednesday clash and makes Owls admission
Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to beat Salford City 2-1 in their Jersey Mike’s Trophy opener on Tuesday evening.
Salford City manager Peter Cklamovski said his team “deserved to win” after they were beaten 2-1 by Sheffield Wednesday in Tuesday night’s Jersey Mike’s Trophy opener at the AIG Stadium.
The Owls came from behind against the League Two side to make a winning start to their Group A campaign, flipping the contest on its head in the second half. Ben Woodburn’s fabulous effort had given Salford a half-time lead, but Wednesday turned the game in their favour after the break through goals from Davis Keillor-Dunn and Jamal Lowe.
Salford dominated the first half, registering ten shots in comparison to Wednesday’s one, and deservedly had their noses in front at the break. Henrik Pedersen’s side were second best all over the pitch, going a fifth successive half without scoring.
However, Wednesday improved after the break and Keillor-Dunn’s maiden goal for the club ten minutes after the restart gave them a much-needed lift. Lowe completed the comeback with 13 minutes to go, tucking home a penalty to claim his sixth goal of the season across all competitions.
Salford, across the 90 minutes, registered 19 shots in comparison to the Owls’ five, meaning Ammies boss Cklamovski was understandably disappointed not to have seen his side come out on top.
“I’ve got to say I’m so proud of the players, the performance doesn’t reflect the scoreboard tonight, I felt it was a game that we deserved to win,” Cklamovski told SCFC TV.
“We got into some really good areas and we played some really good football. The game was a tough game for sure, they’re a good side and respect to them because they’re doing well in their league, top end of the table.
“I just felt the way our team performed, the way we controlled the game we wanted to, we had some really good rhythm and momentum in the game that was very good. The second half opened up a bit, more 50-50, but I thought overall our performance deserved a result.”
