Sheffield Wednesday confirm interim plan following Henrik Pedersen exit
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Matt Hamshaw will take interim charge following the departure of Henrik Pedersen.
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that coach Matt Hamshaw will take charge of first-team affairs until a successor to Henrik Pedersen is appointed.
The Owls announced on Sunday afternoon that Pedersen had been relieved of his duties following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers at the Club Doncaster Sports Village.
Owen Bailey’s first-half brace condemned Wednesday to a second successive defeat, leaving them two points short of the final play-off place.
In terms of results, Wednesday have made a reasonably solid start to the season, particularly given the number of new faces brought into the club during a transformative summer. However, their recent performances have left a lot to be desired.
Some supporters called for Pedersen to go during Tuesday evening’s match against Notts County and again at Doncaster on Saturday. Following those chants, it felt as though the Dane had reached a point of no return.
Following confirmation of Pedersen’s departure from Hillsborough, Wednesday have confirmed that Hamshaw, who was added to the club’s coaching staff during the summer, will take interim charge, starting with Tuesday night’s visit of Cambridge United to S6.

Hamshaw has, of course, been the main man in the dugout previously, taking charge of Rotherham United between April 2025 and March 2026. He has also previously had a two-game stint as caretaker boss at Derby County.
Hamshaw, who made 88 appearances for Wednesday as a player, returned to Hillsborough in August to replace Craig Mudd, who had departed for Manchester City.
Commenting on the appointment of Hamshaw at the time, Owls sporting director Simon Wilson said: “Matt arrives with the type of experience we were looking to add - he has been a serial winner in League One. In addition to the strong knowledge he possesses of League One and the Championship, he also has a very current understanding of the teams and challenges we will face this season.
“He brings something different to what we have within the coaching group, including a strong focus on set pieces, which we know is essential in today’s game.”
