Jamal Lowe strength highlighted after high-pressure Sheffield Wednesday moment

Jamal Lowe rescued an unlikely point for Sheffield Wednesday against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has praised the mental strength of attacker Jamal Lowe after he scored a pressure penalty to earn the Owls a point against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the closing stages at the Accu Stadium, Wednesday were given a route back into the game when Huddersfield Town defender Ibane Bowat headed Jaden Heskey’s cross into his own net, halving the Owls’ deficit.

Wednesday piled bodies forward in pursuit of an equaliser and were presented with an opportunity to secure an unlikely point when centre-back Liam Cooper was on the receiving end of a high foot inside the penalty area. Although referee Edward Duckworth initially signalled for a corner, he eventually pointed to the penalty spot, giving Lowe the chance to bring Wednesday level.

The former Swansea City man stepped up and confidently stroked the ball home, sparking pandemonium among the travelling supporters behind the goal. It marked the Jamaican’s seventh goal of the season across all competitions.

Four of Lowe’s seven goals have come from the penalty spot so far this season, with three proving to be match-winners and Saturday’s effort rescuing a point for Wednesday. However, it felt like a winner, given that the Owls had been trailing 2-0 with just minutes remaining.

Having stepped up to the plate in a high-pressure moment, Lowe has been praised by Pedersen for the confidence he has shown from the penalty spot this season.

“It was strong from Jamal to score this goal,” Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield. “He is strong, mentally strong in these phases.

“Well done to him. It was a very important and deserved point in the end.”

All four of Lowe’s penalties this season have been converted away from Hillsborough, with the versatile attacker finding the net in victories over Leyton Orient, Wycombe Wanderers and Salford City before Saturday’s stalemate with the Terriers.

Lowe’s three goals from open play this season have all come on home soil. He scored against Bolton Wanderers in the first round of the Carabao Cup before claiming a brace in the 7-2 win over Bromley at the end of August.
